Midou The Marimo

Misa recently blogged about her Marimo, Zoro~ It was so cute and to my surprise it’s actually a pet!! Apparently it’s some specie of Algae that can be found in few lakes/sea, lake Akan in Hokkaido is one of those places. Leave it to the Japanese to provide cute names! Mari (Cute bouncy ball) Mo (general term for water plants).

Temporarily homed in a recycled Nutella jar lol
They are considered Lake Fairies and if taken well care of Marimos are known to change your fate and grant wishes or simply bring good luck.
Another folklore about them is that there was once a daughter of a tribe chieftain who fell involve w/ a commoner, the parents were against of their love so the two lovers left all of their possessions and escaped together. It is said that their deep and strong love metamorphosed into Marimo and that they dwell in the dark bottom lake of Akan happily ever after.
So yeah Marimos are kind of popular gift to someone you want to spend the rest of your life with, cause it is a symbol of overcoming tribulations and suffering in pursue of true love.
Holy shit. lol. I’m not really superstitious but to own such a positive cute algae is enough to make my daily atmosphere brighter.

I named my Marimo Midou/Midousuji because I finally binge watched Yowamushi Pedal’s 2nd season after it recently ended and omg all my hatred for Midousuji turned into nothing lo and behold I am now a Midou loyalist lol.
It floats and produce bubbles during photosynthesis♡

KeenShrimp is the eBay store where I purchased Midou. They have this minimum order of three Marimo (for 4 pounds) so I still need to name the other 2, feel free to suggest me names!
Eh I actually bought some decors and sands but I haven’t bothered designing yet since I still need to buy a larger bowl and undecided if I want to put them all together, separate them all or what. So I hope you haven’t got tired of my pic spam because I intend to make an updated post when everything’s settled!
The other two resides on a recycled Ferrero Rocher box ka ka ka!
Once again, thank you Misa for introducing me to these cute Marimo! You guys should visit her blog and see her Zoro~!

  1. aw I get so excited when you post something new *fangirls* (??) , thank you for reading my tiny blog and for mentioning it <3 anyway so cuuute *u* For designing I would suggest to put them in some jars that you can easily find at the thrift store but do not use sand! it would make your marimo dirty and hard to clean >w<

I see, I'd buy some gravel instead then~ how often do you clean your Zoro? Since ours are still small, is it ok to do it at least twice a month (haha)

  7. Since our marimos are still small, we should change the water every two weeks (so twice a month is ok uwu). They grow reaaaally slow ( about 5 mm a year), and when they get bigger we should change the water every week °u°!

  41. How come I never heard of them before? This is probably one of the cutest and yet super plain (in a fashionable kind of sense) green bouncy ball I've seen in a while.
Thinking about names, the first thing I came up with was Kohaku (as in Nigihayami Kohaku Nuchi) because of a pretty obvious reason. ;)
